About Face: Best Primers for the Summer

In case you have not noticed, NYC has been like Hell’s living room for the past few days. You know how I feel about oily skin during the summer months. Lately, I have been having the worst time with keeping my oil production at bay. The only foundation that has been paying it’s dues has been Becca’s Perfect Skin Mineral Powder Foundation (my new holy grail of all powder foundations). The wear of my liquid formulas really haven’t stood up to the humidity and the climbing temperatures. Of course I use a primer, but what I noticed was that I was not using the correct primer to combat the humidity and my oil production. I needed something that would smooth my skin and keep heavy shine at bay.Just like that, the makeup gods answered my prayers with two great products to keep me looking fresh faced all day.

There are two new primers from Make Up For Ever and bareMinerals that I have been wanting to try. I really wanted to try the Make Up For Ever Skin Equalizers because each primer addressed a specific concern and there are 10 of them. Divided into categories that address tone and texture, it’s the first time that I’ve seen that a brand has created a way for the consumer to create their own custom blend in this beauty category. My only concern is the price. It’s a little high for a primer at $38 for a 1 oz. tube, but they also have travel sizes at $14 for a .5 oz tube in three of their most popular formulas and luckily for me there was both a mattifying and a smoothing formula at the travel size price point. I opted to get the smoothing formula.  Next, I had heard about bareMinerals’ newest addition to their makeup line – Blemish Remedy Mattifying Prep Gel. Now this is worth the price. For $24 you get a 1 oz. tube. I wanted to try this with Complexion Rescue and I figured that used together these two products would work well together because they are both gel formulas. My plan was to use both primers by only targeting areas where each primer would give me the most benefit.

I used the Make Up Forever Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer on my jaw and cheeks and the sides of my nose. I used the bareMinerals Mattifying Prep Gel on my forehead, bridge of my nose and cupid’s bow. The bareMinerals Blemish Remedy Mattifying Prep Gel has a cooling effect similar to the cooling effect that you feel when applying Complexion Rescue. What I love about the Make Up Forever Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer is that it that it’s light and you don’t need to use much in order to cover and area. You could use this on your entire face, but if you have oily or combination skin and you want to achieve a flawless look, I would using both together to target your specific needs. I set the look with bareMinerals READY Touch Up Veil.

    • They are but having the right primer to work with your skin type is really important. If you tend to have larger pores, than I would definitely recommend these two primers. The bareMinerals primer mattifies and whether you use a powder or a liquid foundation/BB/CC cream, you don’t have to worry about streaks, or looking dry. The Make Up For Ever can be used right on top of the bareMinerals primer to smoothen but if using both I recommend using a liquid or cream base foundation.

      • Thanks for the suggestions but I don’t have large pores. I do want to try the mute primer in Carmel for darker skin
